Hamish has led complex business transformation and growth programmes for both public and private sector clients, and specislises in collaborative working and online networking.

Hamish was engaged by BIS to improve the interaction of academic and business alliances in order to drive innovation in business. They were primarily using a ‘body contact’ mechanism of meetings and networking events to bring people together, yet this was not yielding the level of interaction they desired. Hamish’s remit was to improve this contact by a factor of ten using a limited budget of just £4million, so he created a series of interlinked online networking forums called Knowledge Transfer Networks. Still in use now, they allow the exchange and safe storage of industry knowledge between sector specialists and promote collaboration.

To drive membership Hamish played an intrinsic part in enabling and upskilling KTN facilitators to understand the more human aspects of managing networks. This involved considerable cultural change, and Hamish’s deep understanding of knowledge management best practice in other European countries was key to this. Within a short time over 60,000 members were actively using the service, considerably more than the ten-fold increase required. The system was delivered on time and within budget, and was deemed a great success by BIS.

International car manufacturers were unsatisfied with the levels of supply chain performance from UK suppliers. They were potentially going to move their accounts to other European OEMs, so the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) engaged Hamish to lead a programme to improve the management, relationships, capability and capacity of UK supply chain businesses. It had no existing profile in the business community, so Hamish set up and trained regional promoters in supply chain issues to encourage participation in the initiative, and then established an online application portal to manage interest. Shortlisted applications were then presented to several assessment boards he put together, and great pains were taken to ensure he and his team were completely independent from decisions. Over 60 industry-led projects involving over 600 suppliers were green-lit and financed, with Hamish responsible for communicating progress back to BIS. He was also tasked with collating all the results from individual projects and then extracting case studies and learns to establish best practice.

As a direct result of this programme, independent assessors found that average Value Added per Person in supply chain organisations increased by over £16k, an increase in productivity of 25%. This success led to the scope being broadened to the aerospace sector, and a similar exercise is currently in the planning stages.
