Learning Provider System Oriented Architecture

The Programme

In collaboration with Practicus, this learning provider has introduced service oriented architecture (SOA), creating business agility through standardised, strategic and re-usable services.

The Challenge

Having completed a series of challenging acquisitions and divestitures in recent years, our client realised it was struggling to meet the changing needs of customers and maintain its sector position. The heavily customised IT infrastructure core and complex set of services meant it was unable to quickly and seamlessly integrate innovation into the business. The programme of works was initiated to introduce service oriented architecture (SOA) on to the estate. The principle benefit of SOA was to create business agility through standardised, strategic and re-usable services. This would allow for shorter development timeframes and smoother integration with third parties, thereby generating value and return on investment earlier in the lifecycle.

The Engagement

After completing gap analysis against the baseline business case, Practicus introduced a recovery. It re-developed plans, RAID logs, budgets and reporting that aligned to our client’s new PMO stage gate governance processes. It also managed multiple third party IT resources and suppliers whilst working closely with cross-functional BAU technical and Operations staff. To maintain buy-in to the programme, Practicus provided communications up to board level to ensure that stakeholders were informed and engaged.

The Outcome

The principle objectives of the programme have been delivered or are on track. Future capability has been created to provide sustainability of the SOA principles, building on the strategic aim of creating business agility.
