Major Australian mining organisation
These assignments were business critical and our confidentiality agreement prevents us from revealing the name of the client and any specific details. The improvements made have signficantly increased product quality.
Assignment 1 – Investigating quality inconsistencies in the manufacturing process
The Mining organisation was experiencing significant variations in product quality and required a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt to perform root cause analysis, looking at both recent and historic data around the manufacturing process. Significantly, the client required someone with a Chemical Engineering background and extensive experience in Design of Experiments.
Practicus provided an accomplished interim MBB and Chemical Engineer who had previously worked for organisations such as ICI. This seasoned improvement practitioner was also previously Head of Operational Excellence at a major Banking organisation. Part of the brief was to demonstrate his approach to analysing the data so that a group of Green Belt practitioners could see the DoE process on a "real world" example. This was as much about solving the immediate problems in the manufacturing process as it was about up-skilling a team of process analysts and demonstrating what a Lean/Six Sigma approach could achieve.
Assignment 2 – Feasibility study for the implementation of a Kanban
This twelve week project investigated and designed a “pull system”, and captured potential savings at two plants in Western Australia. It was conducted and completed in six weeks on a full time equivalent basis by a Practicus Lean Practitioner
This particular practitioner has an interesting blend of improvement experience both in the manufacturing and financial services space. She’s more Lean than Six Sigma, but holds a Black Belt all the same. She was instrumental in implementing Kaizan within a Tier one Bank in Melbourne, but of more relevance was her experience for a heavy manufacturing organisation.
Her overarching recommendation for this client was to develop a web-based Kanban system that would help to smooth demand and increase switching costs for customers. This would take time and money to achieve, and require the development of a business case, software development and hardware purchases. She left the client with a copper-bottom business case from which to act.
